Playlist 02.02.14 (9:11 pm)

Quite the specials tonight! But first up, yet another free Machinedrum EP for mailing list subscribers, unlocking another area in Vapor City... and a new bit of bass-techno from Luke Killen, once known as Sydney idm head Disjunction Reunion.
Then a couple from Sunken Foal, whose Friday Syndrome Vol. 2 was one of the highlights of last year and deserves some more spins — as does his superb remix of Blue Daisy aka Kwesi Darko, who is one of our featured artists tonight, courtesy of a new trap/dubstep/grime EP. Heavier on the beats than his other recent releases, it's pretty awesome.
Just dropping one track from the awesome little mini-album from Misty Conditions, also with a bit of a trap influence on top of the collaborators' breakcore & dubstep backgrounds.
And then on to doseone showcasing his impressive production skillz along with much more varied vocals than we're perhaps used to, from an EP extending some of his music from new ultra-violent computer game Samurai Gunn.
And Dose's label Anticon was very wise to pick up the frankly extraordinary Edinburgh hip-hop trio Young Fathers, whose Scottish, Nigerian & Liberian members mash up contemporary forms of hip-hop & r'n'b with an experimental spirit and an ear to their mixed heritages.
Africa's far from a homogeneous continent, but you don't have to go far from Nigeria to reach South Africa, whence come John Wizards — but with their own musical influences ranging from there up the east coast to Maputo and Dar Es Salaam, they have a bit of a "pan-African" feel themselves, along with generous helpings of electronica befitting their (surprising) home on the Planet µ label.
Finally tonight I celebrated the latest releases from The Future Sound of London's alter egos Amorphous Androgynous, a two-album psychedelic tribute to blaxsploitation movie soundtracks. It's impressively authentic as well as recognizably electronic. I was obsessed with FSOL in the early-to-mid-'90s, and probably credited them with greater sonic explorativeness than I hear listening back now — but nevertheless an amazing amount of their oeuvre seems hardly to have dated at all. A deservingly influential duo.

LISTEN AGAIN, it's now or later! Now better though. Link at bottom, stream in stereo from FBi.
